Gerry Goertzen, MA.

Senior Counsellor/Psychotherapist

Director and Founder of Riverbend Counselling

Helping people restore mental health, strengthen relationships, and build lives they can respect.

Many people seek counselling when life becomes overwhelming, confusing, or painful. Gerry's work is grounded in the belief that meaningful change begins with honest reflection, thoughtful guidance, and the courage to face difficult realities while still holding hope for growth.

Clients often describe feeling at ease in Gerry's presence because he brings both calm steadiness and genuine curiosity to the work. His approach combines compassion with clarity — creating a supportive environment while also helping people confront patterns that may be holding them back.

Alongside extensive professional training and decades of clinical experience, Gerry also brings the perspective of life lived. He is the father of three adult children and grandfather to four grandchildren, and he has experienced the complexities of divorce and remarriage. He also has considerable experience in cross-cultural and humanitarian work, including efforts in Central America and Uganda, Africa. These combined experiences deepen his appreciation for the diverse realities people face in relationships, family life, and personal transitions, and inform a grounded, compassionate perspective in his work with others.

While Gerry enjoys leadership within the agency, as well as writing and speaking, he is at his best when meeting with individuals who are navigating personal struggles and seeking meaningful change. He offers a caring and thoughtful approach while also providing clear, practical guidance that helps people move forward. His goal is not simply to help people cope with life's difficulties, but to help them understand themselves more deeply so they can strengthen their mental health, live with greater integrity, and move forward with renewed purpose and confidence.

Gerry's counselling philosophy can be described as a balance of "velvet and steel." The velvet represents compassion, patience, and the creation of a safe place where people feel understood and respected. The steel represents honesty, clarity, and the willingness to face difficult truths that are often necessary for growth.

Lasting change rarely comes from comfort alone, nor from harsh confrontation. Real progress happens when people feel both supported and guided toward meaningful change. Gerry's approach seeks to create that balance — offering warmth and understanding while also inviting responsibility, insight, and courageous action.
