Mathew Thomas, MTH, PhD, RP

Counsellor/Psychotherapist

Mathew is an independent therapist working abroad whom we’ve fully vetted and are confident in the services he provides. If you are seeking E-counselling (i.e., Google Hangouts, Skype, FaceTime, What’sApp) we will happily accommodate the necessary arrangements for you to meet him.

Mathew Thomas (Matt), RP, MA, CPE, EMDR, PhD (Psychology), is a globally educated psychotherapist registered with the College of Psychotherapists of Ontario since 2016 and as a Psychologist with the Singapore Psychological Society (SPS). His personal and professional journey spans the United States, Canada, India, Thailand, South Africa, Singapore, and the European Union, where he has resided since 2022. He views himself as part of an international community of peace seekers and brings a deeply compassionate, culturally attuned perspective to his work. Matt has supervised psychotherapists in Canada and budding psychologists in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

For more than 20 years, Matt has supported individuals, couples, groups, and professionals navigating profound emotional challenges. His clinical experience includes unresolved childhood trauma, burnout, addiction, relational conflict, and the complex ways these experiences shape emotional and relational life. Before becoming a therapist, he was a client himself-an experience that continues to shape the empathy, authenticity, and depth he brings to every therapeutic relationship.

Matt’s approach extends beyond the verbal mind. He attunes sensitively to emotional and somatic cues within the therapeutic space, tracking moments of disconnection and gently guiding clients back to breath, body, and internal awareness. By working directly with the nervous system whether in states of fight, flight, or freeze, he creates a regulated, grounded, and safe space for healing and integration.

His central clinical focus is trauma healing. He understands that trauma is not defined solely by past events but by the psychological wound that remains and often reappears in present-day relationships. Matt specializes in helping individuals and couples heal the enduring effects of childhood trauma, particularly when these wounds manifest as mistrust, emotional distance, recurring cycles of conflict, or attachment wounds. His work is grounded in Jungian psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Matt entered the field through both rigorous academic training and lived experience. Personal therapy allowed him to transform his own pain into purpose- a journey that continues to anchor and humanize his work today.

He holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology through the University of California FCE and completed his doctoral residency at Vancouver General Hospital. His dissertation, “A Study of Psycho-Spiritual Approaches to Addiction Treatment Within Controlled Environments,” reflects his interest in integrative and holistic pathways to recovery. His early clinical supervision was under late  Myron Ebersole and  Mary Wilkinson of Advocate Health Care System in Illinois, and he later received psychoanalytic supervision in New York under Dr. Lee Jenkins of Columbia University.
